The right to bear arms is one of the basic constitutional rights granted by our founding fathers. One of the main reasons why people own guns is to protect and defend their families from criminals. As a gun owner it is our responsibility to secure our weapons in a safe place. Locking up our firearms in a gun safe is the best way to protect everyone in the home.
Here are some tips on what to look for when shopping for a gun safe.
Body:
Gun safes have to be made out of solid steel to ensure durability and strength.
The thicker the body the heavier the gun safe. Here is a basic list of steel dimensions to help you compare steel thickness.
Steel gauge and dimension:
Gauge of steel 12 = 0.104"
Gauge of steel 10 = 0.134"
Gauge of steel 7 = 0.179"
Gauge of steel 4 = 0.224"
Doors:
The door should not have any play when you push or pull on the handle, specially if you are buying a fireproof safe. Furthermore, it should be equipped with a relocking device to ensure protection after a break-in attempt.
Locks:
Combination locks
A combination lock is a type of lock in which a sequence of numbers is used to open the lock. There are numbers engraved in the dial. The dial is placed inside a ring, the ring has a small notch on top. The sequence may be entered by turning the dial and lining up the numbers with the small notch on the ring.
Digital locks
A digital lock is a locking device which is power operated ( usually by a battery), and it recognizes a number sequence which you have to enter on a key pad. Digital locks are typically considered more secure than conventional mechanical locks and can include additional features like time delay.
